Halloween is a holiday adored by children, but also by many parents. The preparation, the choice of costumes and the harvest of candies, each stage comes with these little pleasures. Of course, like all holidays, Halloween comes with massive overconsumption. Eco-responsible Halloween... How do we do it? Marie fil has concocted some tips for you to make your Halloween more environmentally friendly!
Borrow or rent your Halloween costumes
Dressing up one evening a year can be done without buying a new one. Talk to your friends, they probably have a costume to lend you or even trade you. Probably you can also find parts of your costume in your usual clothes. A makeup and you're done! Some companies also offer the possibility of renting a Halloween costume. It allows you to have a beautiful costume without having to store it or buy it. Do you have a growing child? Think of friends who just had a baby, they just might not want to invest on baby costumes, but appreciated getting one for free.
Cook the pumpkin
We buy a pumpkin and let it rot on our balcony. This is first level food waste. However, pumpkin can be prepared in many recipes after Halloween. Soups, pies, seeds, muffins and a host of possibilities to enjoy fall. Cooking pumpkin saves money on groceries and avoids food waste.
Choice of more eco-responsible candies
Obviously, for hygiene and safety, we will not advise you today to pack candies in bulk in paper bags. Unless you do it with the children of your relatives who know you, we avoid with the little ghosts that pass by the house. An eco-responsible package that ends up in the trash is not ideal! No parent would let their child eat a package that was not properly sealed. So don't. However, some candies allow cardboard packaging instead of plastic. Think of Smarties in cardboard boxes or Nerds. Some candies are also in cardboard rolls. Cardboard packaging can be placed for recovery. It saves a lot of plastic!
Please stop using small plastic bags!
We buy 100 small plastic bags, we add candy in plastic wrappers that will go into a plastic bag. This is an overuse of plastic when it is not necessary and is a great scourge of the environment. These little plastic bags will not be recovered or recycled... They will go straight to the trash! Resist the temptation to buy it. To spend Halloween, opt for a reusable bag that you can reuse next year!
Reuse before you buy for eco-friendly Halloween
Many families already have everything they need to decorate the household. No need to have a new decoration every year. Even less need to follow fads or be tempted by plastic drugstore products. In fact, you could put the same decorations on for 20 years and no one would notice. The important thing is to participate, not to flash! ;)
Marie fil encourages an eco-responsible lifestyle and offers solutions in this regard, but does not encourage the overconsumption of eco-responsible products! Replacing a reusable plastic container that you already have with an eco-responsible solution also creates waste. Eco-responsibility is first of all reducing consumption and using an object until its lifespan is over. If you don't need to buy any new Halloween merchandise, just don't shop... Your wallet and the planet will thank you!
